Community Health Workers (CHWs)

TibaSalama aims to utilize digital technology to bridge healthcare gaps in Tanzania, with a focus on empowering communities and saving lives, particularly in maternal and child health for children aged 0-5 years. Operating in seven regions—Dodoma, Tanga, Geita, Kigoma, Morogoro, Mtwara, and Rukwa—the organization faces various challenges such as limited healthcare access, rural-urban disparities, economic constraints, and cultural influences on health behavior. Through enhanced strategies, TibaSalama aims to improve maternal and child health outcomes, enhance access to primary healthcare services, and increase community awareness and education.

Some roles and responsibilities of our CHWs include:

TibaSalama Digital Health App utilizes Community Health Workers (CHWs) in 95% of its operations. CHWs play a crucial role in healthcare by providing education on topics such as nutrition, vaccinations, family planning, and malaria prevention. Additionally, they offer essential medical services like first aid and medication administration, guiding individuals to appropriate healthcare facilities, and encouraging expectant mothers to attend clinics early. They also promote maternal and child health and gather data on health indicators within their communities. Acting as a bridge between communities and formal healthcare systems, CHWs enhance healthcare accessibility, promote healthy behaviors, and address health disparities at the grassroots level.

Health Education: CHWs educate community members about preventive health measures, such as proper hygiene practices, nutrition, family planning, and immunizations.

Disease Prevention and Screening: They conduct screenings for various health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and infectious diseases, and promote preventive measures to reduce the risk of illness.

Maternal and Child Health: CHWs provide support and education to pregnant women and mothers, including prenatal care, safe delivery practices, breastfeeding support, and infant care.

Referrals: They refer community members to appropriate healthcare facilities or providers for further diagnosis and treatment, especially for conditions that require advanced medical care.

Health Monitoring: CHWs monitor the health status of community members, track disease outbreaks, and report health data to higher-level health authorities for surveillance and response purposes.

Advocacy and Support: They advocate for the healthcare needs of their communities, address social determinants of health, and provide emotional support to individuals and families facing health challenges.

The TibaSalama Digital Health App (TS-DHA) identifies CHWs through a specific process and provides regular training to ensure they can continue delivering efficient and high-quality services to the community, aiming for positive outcomes consistently, especially in the collection of vital information about pregnant women and children.
